What Is a vCIO (Virtual CIO)?

A part-time technology executive who owns your roadmap, budget and quarterly reviews.

A vCIO, or virtual chief information officer, is a senior technology advisor who provides executive-level IT strategy on a part-time basis, typically as part of a managed IT agreement. Businesses that cannot justify a full-time CIO still need someone doing that job. The vCIO is that person.

What a vCIO does

  • Owns the technology roadmap. A 12 to 36 month plan for upgrades, security priorities, lifecycle replacements and growth needs. See what is a technology roadmap.
  • Builds the budget. Turns the roadmap into a forecast so technology spending is planned, not reactive.
  • Runs quarterly business reviews. Reports on what happened, what was found in alignment audits, what is next, and how technology is supporting business goals.
  • Leads cybersecurity strategy. Decides which protections are needed, in what order, and how they map to compliance and cyber insurance requirements.
  • Advises on decisions. Cloud vs on-premises, which phone system, whether to open the new office on the same network, what a merger means for IT.

vCIO vs fractional CIO

The terms are used interchangeably. Some firms sell fractional CIO time on its own; most managed service providers include the role in the agreement, which is how Mentis Group does it.

What a vCIO is not

Not a help desk contact, not a project manager, and not a salesperson for the provider's next upgrade. A vCIO should be comfortable telling you not to spend money.

How it works at Mentis Group

Every Fully Managed IT client has a dedicated vCIO who leads quarterly business reviews, technology budgeting, long-term planning, cybersecurity strategy and lifecycle forecasting. The vCIO works from the findings of our technology alignment reviews, so recommendations are based on your actual environment rather than a generic checklist. It is the Plan step of the Mentis Process, and it is part of what is included in managed IT services. Businesses that want the advisory role on its own can look at IT consulting in Dallas.
