What Is Proactive IT Support?
Fixing problems before users feel them: what proactive support looks like in practice.
Proactive IT support means finding and fixing problems before they interrupt your business, through monitoring, scheduled maintenance, standards audits and lifecycle planning. Reactive support waits for a ticket. Proactive support tries to make sure the ticket never gets opened.
What proactive actually looks like
- Monitoring with alerts. Disk space, failed backups, expiring certificates, offline access points and unusual login activity all trigger an engineer before a user notices.
- Scheduled patching. Operating systems, browsers and third-party apps are updated on a cadence, with testing, instead of whenever someone remembers.
- Alignment audits. Someone regularly checks your environment against a written standard and fixes what drifted. At Mentis Group this is done by Technology Alignment Engineers against more than 350 controls. See what is a technology alignment review.
- Lifecycle planning. Hardware and software are replaced on a schedule, before end of support, so you are never running on something no longer receiving security updates.
- Root-cause work. When the same ticket shows up three times, a proactive team fixes the cause instead of the symptom again.
Why it matters
Most outages and most security incidents come from known, preventable conditions: an unpatched system, a full disk, a backup that quietly stopped, an account with too much access. Proactive support is the discipline of closing those conditions on a schedule. The result is fewer tickets, fewer emergencies and a much calmer relationship with your technology.
How to tell if your provider is proactive
Ask for their monitoring alerts from last month. Ask for the patch compliance report. Ask when your environment was last audited against a standard and what was found. If the answers are vague, you have reactive support with a monthly invoice. The full contrast is in managed IT vs break/fix, and the tooling behind it is explained in what is network monitoring and RMM.
Proactive work is the whole point of the Mentis Process and our Fully Managed IT program.
