What Is Microsoft Azure Used For in a Small or Mid-Sized Business?

For most SMBs: servers, virtual desktops, backups and identity without a server closet.

For a small or mid-sized business, Microsoft Azure is used to run servers, virtual desktops, backups, file services and identity in Microsoft's cloud instead of on hardware in your office. Enterprises use it for far more, but those are the workloads that matter for most companies under a thousand employees.

The practical uses

  • Application and database servers. The accounting system, the ERP, the line-of-business application that used to live on a box in the closet.
  • Virtual desktops. Azure Virtual Desktop streams a full Windows desktop to any device, useful for remote staff, contractors and CAD or finance apps that need a controlled environment. See what is Azure Virtual Desktop.
  • File services. Azure Files or a migrated file server for data that does not belong in SharePoint.
  • Backup and disaster recovery. Off-site backup storage and replicated servers that can take over if the office is down.
  • Identity. Microsoft Entra ID, the directory behind Microsoft 365, is an Azure service and often the first piece a business adopts.
  • Hosted Exchange, SharePoint and Teams. Microsoft 365 workloads run on Azure infrastructure.

What still belongs on-premises

Systems tied to physical equipment (manufacturing lines, door access, some phone systems), workloads with heavy local data and thin internet, and a few licensing-constrained applications. Most businesses land on a hybrid design; see on-premises vs cloud.

Why Azure specifically

If your company runs on Microsoft 365, Azure shares the same identity, licensing and management tools, which simplifies security and administration. Businesses with different needs sometimes choose AWS; the comparison is in Azure vs AWS.

Getting there

Moving to Azure is a scoped project: assess, plan, pilot, migrate, optimize. See how does an Azure migration work.
