What Is Dark Web Monitoring and Is It Worth It?

Watching criminal marketplaces for your company's leaked logins so you can reset them first.

Dark web monitoring is a service that continuously scans criminal forums, marketplaces and data dumps for your company's email addresses, passwords and other credentials, and alerts you when they appear so you can reset them before an attacker uses them. It is an early warning system, not a shield.

Why leaked credentials matter

When another company is breached, the usernames and passwords stolen there are sold or posted. Because people reuse passwords, a password leaked from a retail site often still works on that person's work email. Attackers test these lists automatically against Microsoft 365, VPNs and remote access. If the leaked password is still active and MFA is not enforced, they are in.

What monitoring finds

  • Employee email addresses paired with plaintext or hashed passwords.
  • Credentials for your domain appearing in newly published breach dumps.
  • Sometimes internal documents, customer lists or session tokens.

What it cannot do

It cannot remove data from the dark web, and it will not see everything: private sales and closed forums are not fully visible. Treat every alert as a reason to reset the password and check the account for suspicious activity.

Is it worth it?

Yes, as one inexpensive layer alongside the controls that actually block credential attacks: enforced MFA, a password manager so passwords are unique, and login monitoring. Monitoring alone without those is a report of a problem you cannot stop.

What to do with an alert

Reset the exposed password everywhere it was used, confirm MFA is on, review recent sign-ins and mailbox rules, and remind the user why reuse is dangerous. Dark web exposure is also a common precursor to ransomware intrusions.
