What Is a Wireless Site Survey and Heat Map?
Measuring real signal, interference and coverage so access points go where they are needed.
A wireless site survey measures how Wi-Fi actually behaves in your space, including signal strength, interference, coverage gaps and channel overlap, and a heat map displays the results as a floor plan colored by signal quality. It replaces guessing about access point placement with data.
What the survey includes
- Walkthrough measurement. Signal strength and noise are recorded across the floor plan with survey equipment.
- Interference analysis. Neighboring networks, microwaves, cordless phones, warehouse equipment and building materials that degrade signal.
- Coverage and capacity review. Not just "is there signal" but "can 40 people in this conference room all join a video call."
- Access point audit. Testing each existing AP, checking for overlap and dead zones, verifying spacing and channel plans.
- Heat map. A visual of signal coverage, weak points and problem areas.
- Recommendations. Where to add, move or remove access points, what channels and power settings to use, and what cabling is needed.
Predictive vs on-site
A predictive survey models coverage from a floor plan before a space is built or occupied, useful for new offices and moves. An on-site survey measures the real environment. The best results come from a predictive design validated by an on-site survey after installation.
When you need one
- Moving into or building out a space. See planning IT for an office move.
- Complaints about slow or dropping Wi-Fi that reboots do not fix.
- Upgrading access points; see Wi-Fi 6 vs 6E vs 7.
- Warehouses, clinics and large open offices where coverage and density are hard to eyeball. See how many access points do I need.
- Adding VoIP, scanners, tablets or other devices that depend on reliable wireless.
Why it saves money
Access points cost money and cabling costs more. A survey prevents buying six where four placed correctly would do, and prevents installing four where the building needs eight.
