What Is a Technology Roadmap?
A 12 to 36 month plan for where your technology is going and what it will cost.
A technology roadmap is a written plan, usually covering 12 to 36 months, that lays out the upgrades, security priorities, lifecycle replacements and growth needs for your business, in order and with budget attached. It turns IT from a series of surprises into a schedule.
What a good roadmap contains
- Current state. An honest inventory: what you have, what is out of support, where the risk is.
- Business drivers. Hiring plans, new locations, new services, compliance deadlines, insurance renewals.
- Prioritized initiatives. Each with a why, a rough cost and a target quarter. Examples: replace the firewall before its end of support, move file servers to SharePoint, roll out MFA to every application, refresh a third of the laptops.
- Lifecycle schedule. When each class of hardware and software is due. See IT lifecycle management.
- Budget forecast. The initiatives rolled into a year-by-year number.
Who builds it
Usually a vCIO, working from audit findings and conversations with leadership. It is reviewed quarterly and adjusted as the business changes.
Why it matters
Without a roadmap, technology decisions are made at the worst possible moment: when something has already failed. With one, replacements are planned, purchases are timed, and leadership can see what next year costs before it arrives. It also keeps security work from being perpetually postponed. How much a small business should budget for IT shows how the roadmap feeds the budget.
How Mentis Group does it
Plan is the third step of the Mentis Process: after we identify how your business works and assess your environment against best-practice standards, your vCIO builds a 12 to 36 month roadmap aligned to your goals. It is included in Fully Managed IT and revisited at every quarterly business review.
