What Does an AWS Consultant Do?
Design, migrate, secure and right-size your AWS environment, and handle what the console can't.
An AWS consultant designs, builds, migrates, secures and optimizes your Amazon Web Services environment, and provides hands-on support when the AWS console and documentation are not enough. AWS itself sells infrastructure; a consultant makes sure it is set up correctly for your business and keeps it that way.
What an AWS consultant typically does
- Architecture. Designs accounts, networking (VPCs), identity and access, and the services that fit the workload.
- Migration. Moves servers, databases and applications into EC2, RDS and related services, with a plan for cutover and rollback.
- Security. Locks down IAM permissions, enables logging and monitoring, encrypts storage, and reviews the environment against AWS best practices and your compliance needs.
- Cost optimization. Right-sizes instances, applies savings plans and reserved pricing, cleans up unused resources and storage.
- Operations. Backups, patching, monitoring and support for EC2 instances, Amazon WorkSpaces desktops and other services.
- Support escalation. Works with AWS support on your behalf when there is a platform issue.
When a business needs one
You inherited an AWS environment nobody fully understands. A vendor or developer built something in AWS and you now depend on it. Your AWS bill keeps rising. You need to meet a security or compliance requirement. Or you are choosing between AWS and Azure and want an honest answer; see Azure vs AWS.
Consultant vs AWS support plans
AWS support plans answer questions about AWS services and respond to platform issues. They do not design your environment, manage your servers or fix your application. A local consultant covers the hands-on work; see how to get support for Amazon EC2 or WorkSpaces.
