What breach remediation includes

  1. Triage and containment. Isolating affected systems, disabling compromised accounts, protecting backups and stopping the attacker's access path.
  2. Investigation. Determining how the attacker got in, what they touched, how long they were present and whether data was exfiltrated, while preserving logs and evidence for insurers, counsel and regulators.
  3. Coordination. Working with your cyber insurance carrier, breach counsel and, where required, law enforcement.
  4. Recovery. Rebuilding from clean images, restoring verified backups in priority order, resetting credentials and closing the entry point.
  5. Prevention. Implementing the controls that would have stopped the incident: MFA, endpoint detection, patching, immutable backups, segmentation, monitoring and training.
  6. Documentation. A written account of what happened and what changed.
