Do Nonprofits Get Microsoft 365 Discounts?

Eligible nonprofits get granted and discounted Microsoft 365 licenses. Who qualifies and how to apply.

Yes. Eligible nonprofits can receive granted (free) Microsoft 365 licenses for a limited number of users and significant discounts on paid plans through Microsoft's nonprofit program. Microsoft changed the specific offers in 2025, so confirm the current grant and discount details on Microsoft's nonprofit site before budgeting, but the program remains one of the largest technology savings available to a nonprofit.

Who qualifies

Organizations recognized as charitable nonprofits in their country (in the U.S., typically 501(c)(3) status) with a mission that benefits the broader community, and that do not discriminate. Certain organization types are excluded, such as governmental entities, schools and universities (which have separate programs), healthcare organizations in some cases, and political and lobbying organizations. Microsoft validates eligibility, often through a partner organization.

What the program includes

  • Granted licenses for a capped number of users on a base plan, which covers email, Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive.
  • Discounted pricing on plans that include desktop Office apps and, importantly, on Business Premium, which brings the security tooling (Intune, Defender, Conditional Access) most nonprofits need. See Business Basic vs Standard vs Premium.
  • Discounts on other Microsoft products and Azure credits for eligible organizations.

How to apply

  1. Register on Microsoft's nonprofit portal and submit eligibility documentation.
  2. Once approved, assign granted licenses and purchase discounted licenses through the Microsoft 365 admin center or a partner.
  3. Configure the tenant properly: MFA, sharing settings, backup and device management. A discount does not secure anything by itself.

Common mistakes

Leaving paid users on granted licenses that are not the right plan for their work. Never applying at all. Assuming the free tier includes the security features it does not. Losing track of eligibility renewals.
