Cat5e vs Cat6 vs Cat6a: Which Cable Should Your Office Use?

Cat6 handles most offices. Cat6a is the safer choice for new builds and the next Wi-Fi.

Cat6 supports 1 Gbps to 100 meters and 10 Gbps over short runs; Cat6a supports 10 Gbps to the full 100 meters with better noise resistance; Cat5e tops out at 1 Gbps and is no longer worth installing new. For a new office build, Cat6a is the safer investment. For adding a few drops to an existing Cat6 office, Cat6 is fine.

Cat5e

Gigabit capable and still everywhere in older offices. It works, but it will not support 10 Gbps or the power and bandwidth demands of newer Wi-Fi access points. Do not install it new; replace it when the opportunity comes.

Cat6

The mainstream choice for the past decade. Full gigabit to every desk, 10 Gbps up to roughly 55 meters in good conditions. Slightly thicker than Cat5e. Adequate for most desks, printers and phones for years.

Cat6a

10 Gbps to the full 100-meter distance with shielding against interference. Thicker and a bit more expensive in cable and labor, but it is the grade that supports Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 access points at full speed, high-power PoE devices and 10 Gbps backbone links between closets. See Wi-Fi 6 vs 6E vs 7.

How to choose

  • New construction or full re-cable: Cat6a. The labor is the expensive part, and you will not want to open the walls again.
  • Adding drops to an existing Cat6 office: Cat6 matches what you have.
  • Access point runs: Cat6a, regardless of what the desks use.
  • Between closets and to the server room: fiber, or Cat6a for short runs.
  • Warehouses and long runs: mind the 100-meter limit; fiber beyond it.

What matters as much as the grade

Termination quality, testing and certification, labeling, plenum rating where required, and avoiding runs alongside electrical. A certified Cat6 installation beats an uncertified Cat6a one. See what is structured cabling and, for pricing drivers, how much structured cabling costs.
